First-Screen Search Tool

What Should You Click First for a Harris County Tax Assessor Property Search?

The fastest answer depends on whether you need value, tax payment, deed history, homestead exemption or protest help. Do not start with a paid property website. Start with the official Harris County and HCAD portals below.

What You Can Find

What Shows in a Harris County HCAD Property Record?

HCAD property records are appraisal records. They help explain value and property characteristics, but they do not replace a tax receipt, deed copy, title report or survey.

1

Account number

The primary identifier used for HCAD value and tax-office statement lookup.

2

Owner name

Public owner/taxpayer information where available under Texas rules.

3

Property address

The physical property address used by appraisal records.

4

Land value

Appraisal district value assigned to land portion of the property.

5

Improvement value

Value assigned to structures and improvements.

6

Exemptions

Homestead, over-65, disability, veteran or other applicable exemptions.

7

Property details

Building area, class, year, land area and other appraisal characteristics.

8

Protest tools

Account-based access to protest, notice and iFile/iSettle workflows.

Important: HCAD determines appraisal information. The Harris County Tax Office calculates, collects and disburses taxes after taxing entities adopt tax rates. The County Clerk records deeds and real property documents. A paid aggregator is not the source of truth.

Tax Records

Harris County Property Tax Records — Statements, Receipts, Payments and Due Dates

The Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office Property Tax Division maintains tax accounts and collects property taxes for many taxing entities. Use this office for bills, statements, receipts, payment plans and delinquent tax questions.

Search tax statement

Use the Tax Office property page or MyHarrisCountyTax. Search by account number, property address or property owner, then select the bill or statement.

Open property tax page

View statements and receipts

Use the Tax Office statements/receipts page to confirm current year tax, prior year balance, payments applied and printable receipt information.

Open statements and receipts

Payment deadline

Most property tax payments are generally due by January 31 of the year following the tax year. Penalty and interest begin February 1 when bills are unpaid.

Online payment fees

The Tax Office FAQ says online payments can be made by e-check or card. Credit card transactions include a non-refundable surcharge, and e-checks have a small flat fee.

Escrow buyer tip: If your mortgage company pays taxes, still check the account before the deadline. A statement being mailed or escrow being collected does not always prove the payment posted correctly.

Deeds and Recorded Documents

Harris County Deed Search, Real Property Records and Clerk Documents

A deed is not stored by HCAD and is not the same as a tax statement. Use the Harris County Clerk Real Property search when you need deeds, liens, releases, plats, mortgages, assignments or recorded document copies.

Search real property records

Use the Harris County Clerk Real Property search. Official search pages note that images are available from 11/1/1960.

Recording delay

Once a document is processed for recording, it may take 1 to 2 business days to appear in the search inquiry.

What to know before requesting copies

The Clerk’s public records guidance says owner name and legal description may be needed when requesting document copies. Legal description can often be found from a tax statement.

Title warning

Real property records are useful, but they do not replace a title company, attorney, surveyor or full title search for legal decisions.

Tax Relief

Harris County Homestead Exemption, Over-65, Disability and Veteran Exemptions

HCAD handles exemption applications for Harris County properties. For a regular residential homestead exemption, HCAD guidance says to file between January 1 and April 30 for timely processing. HCAD also provides forms for over-65, disability, surviving spouse and disabled veteran-related exemptions.

Residence homestead

Use the property as your principal residence and file with HCAD. Make sure HCAD records match your name and residence documents where required.

April 30 filing window

HCAD says regular residential homestead exemption applications should be filed between January 1 and April 30 for timely processing before tax statements are issued in the fall.

Over-65 or disabled deferral

The Tax Office has separate guidance for over-65/disabled deferral and installment options. Deferral is not the same as exemption and may affect delinquent taxes.

Use official HCAD forms

Do not pay a private mailer for a basic exemption form. HCAD forms and electronic filing tools are the official route.

Need exemption help? Start with HCAD homeowner exemption guidance and online services. Keep copies of your driver’s license, ownership documents and account number ready.

Open Exemption Help
Value Protest

Harris County HCAD Protest, iFile, iSettle and ARB Hearing Help

Use HCAD protest tools when you believe your appraised value is incorrect or an exemption was improperly denied. The tax bill is not the right place to protest value; the appraisal protest must go through HCAD and the Appraisal Review Board process.

1

Read the notice date first

HCAD’s FAQ says the protest deadline is May 15 or 30 days after the date the notice of appraised value was mailed, whichever is later. If a required notice is mailed late, the notice date matters.

2

File online through the owner account when possible

HCAD says the easiest way to file is through the owner’s account using the Electronic Filing and Notice System. iFile is the electronic protest process.

3

Understand iFile vs iSettle

iFile means filing the protest electronically. iSettle means the protest may be considered for an electronic value-reduction offer. Filing through iFile does not automatically mean an iSettle offer will be made.

4

Prepare real evidence

Use comparable sales, photos, repair estimates, incorrect building data, flood or damage issues, appraisal reports and neighborhood evidence. “Taxes are high” is not the same as “appraised value is wrong.”

Deadline warning: By the time tax bills are due, the value protest window may already be closed. Check the appraisal notice and HCAD owner account as soon as the notice arrives.

Parcel Map

HCAD Parcel Viewer and Harris County Property Maps

Use the HCAD Parcel Viewer when you need map context, nearby accounts, parcel boundaries for research, and assessment information. Harris County records pages also route users to HCAD property maps for countywide property-map access.

Use map for visual confirmation

When an address returns multiple accounts, map view can help confirm the correct parcel before you review value, tax or deed data.

Use account number for final action

Map clicks are helpful, but serious tasks should be completed with the exact HCAD account number and official record page.

Do not treat map as a survey

Map data is not a legal boundary survey. Use recorded plats, deed descriptions and a licensed surveyor for boundary or easement decisions.

Connect map to deeds

Use HCAD map and account data for location, then use the County Clerk for recorded documents when ownership history or deed language matters.

Which Office You Need

Harris County Tax Assessor vs HCAD vs County Clerk — Correct Office Router

A Harris County property search can involve three offices. Choosing the correct one prevents missed protest deadlines, payment penalties and wrong-record confusion.

Harris Central Appraisal District

Use HCAD for account search, owner/address appraisal records, market/appraised value, exemptions, notices, iFile protests, iSettle and ARB hearing evidence. Main location: 13013 Northwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77040-6305.

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector / Tax Office

Harris County Clerk

Use the County Clerk for real property records, deeds, liens, releases, plats, recorded document images and copy requests. The Real Property Department records documents related to real estate in Harris County.

Appraisal Review Board

Use the ARB protest process for value or exemption disputes after filing a timely protest through HCAD. The ARB is separate from the Tax Office.

Troubleshooting

Common Problems When Searching Harris County Property Records

Most Harris County property lookup problems happen because users mix HCAD appraisal records with Tax Office statements or County Clerk deeds. Fix the search path before assuming the record is missing.

1

No address result appears

Remove city, ZIP, apartment number, punctuation and street suffix. Try beginning street number plus ZIP code in HCAD’s address search help method.

2

Owner name is outdated after sale

Check Harris County Clerk real property records. HCAD, Tax Office and Clerk systems can update on different schedules after closing.

3

Tax bill does not match appraised value

Tax bills depend on appraised value, exemptions, taxable value, tax rates and payments. HCAD explains value; Tax Office explains bills and receipts.

4

Protest deadline is unclear

Check your notice date and owner account. The protest deadline is May 15 or 30 days after the notice was mailed, whichever is later.

5

Map line looks wrong

HCAD maps are for property research. For legal boundary, easement or building-setback decisions, use recorded plats and a licensed surveyor.
